Defects Caused by Improper Pressing: Gloss Streaks
Posted on 2/12/2014
Gloss streaks occur for the same reason staining does: misuse of moisture. Gloss can be affected or stripped with improper application of water used in localized pressing, resulting in matte-like areas (visible in a raking light) on any number of places on a cover — particularly the white areas and inside cover. Silver Age comics are the most easily affected due to the lower paper quality used in printing. Many times, gloss loss or streaking can be repaired, depending on the severity.
