CGC-certified Detective Comics #27 Sells for $1.74 Million

Holy High-Bidder, Batman! A Detective Comics #27 graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) realized $1.74 million in a May 21 Goldin Auctions sale. The price is a record for the issue, which features the first appearance of Batman.

Detective Comics #27, first published by National Press in 1939, was an attempt to mimic the success of Action Comics' Superman. The new superhero, Batman, by creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger, was indeed a success, which lead to the Caped Crusader's own solo series in 1940. National Press later renamed itself DC Comics after their debut title, Detective Comics.

The issue first crossed the million-dollar threshold in 2010 when a copy graded CGC 8.0 sold for $1,075,000. In 2020, a copy graded CGC 7.0 climbed even higher to $1.5 million. The copy graded CGC 6.5 in the Goldin Auction now holds the record for the issue and is the sixth CGC-certified comic book to sell for over $1 million in 2022. To see them all, click here.

• an X-Men #1 graded CGC 8.5 that realized $121,200
• a Batman #1 graded CGC 1.5 that realized $103,200
