CGC-certified Marvel Comics #1 on Exhibit in Columbus, Ohio

Posted on 8/16/2022

Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes will be on display until September 5, 2022.

A copy of Marvel Comics #1 that was authenticated and graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) is on public display for a limited time at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio. Graded CGC 4.0 and easily worth six figures, the Golden Age rarity is part of the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit that is being hosted by the museum.

Published by Timely Comics, Marvel Comics #1 includes the first appearance of the Human Torch. Not to be confused with the character who would later appear with the Fantastic Four, this Human Torch was an android named Jim Hammond with the ability to engulf his body with fire. This issue also includes the first appearance of Ka-Zar, Angel, Jungle Terror and Masked Raider, and the origin of Namor the Sub-Mariner.

Upon its release in November 1939, this book sold 80,000 copies, which prompted its publisher to hire Joe Simon and Jack Kirby to create Captain America Comics #1. Later it served as the inspiration for when Timely Comics became Marvel Comics in 1961.

Marvel Comics #1 is recognized by collectors as one of the world’s most valuable comics. A CGC 9.2 copy realized $2.4 million in a March 2022 ComicConnect auction.

In addition to the comic, the only remaining page of original artwork from the book is also on display in the exhibit. In total, the exhibit includes more than 300 items such as classic Marvel comic books, original artwork, photos, collectibles and costumes worn in many of the Marvel movies.

Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes is a co-production of Semmel Exhibitions, Marvel and the Seattle Museum of Pop Culture. The exhibition premiered in Seattle in April 2018 and has since traveled to venues throughout the US and Canada. To learn more, click here.

The exhibit can be seen at COSI until September 5, 2022.
