First Appearance of X-Men Certified by CGC Tops $870,000 — Another Record

A high-grade copy of the book that features the first appearance of the X-Men set a new record in a ComicConnect auction. Graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), this copy sold for $871,999 in ComicConnect’s Auction #151 on September 23, 2022.
This book features the origin and first appearance of the mutant superhero group known as the X-Men, as well as the first appearances of Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Marvel Girl, their mentor Professor X and nemesis Magneto. This particular copy is one of only four graded CGC 9.6 in the CGC Census, which lists only two higher. This exact copy set the previous record of $807,300 when ComicConnect sold it in June 2021.
Also finishing very well was a Marvel Comics #1 graded CGC 6.0 which realized an impressive $729,000. Released in 1939 by Timely Comics (Marvel’s predecessor), this comic includes the first appearance of Ka-Zar and the original Human Torch, as well as the origin of Namor. This book comes from the earliest pedigreed collection ever found, which originally turned up in Kansas City in the late 1960s and featured a large accumulation of nearly 250 high-grade #1 issues from 1937 through the 1940s.
Restored copies featuring the very first appearances of Superman and Batman each sold for $350,750. The pair of grails from the late 1930s are an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 8.5 Restored and a Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 7.5 Restored.
