CGC-graded More Fun Comics #52 Expected to Set New Record

Spirited bidding for a More Fun Comics #52 that is graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) has set the Golden Age book on a path to a new sales record. The high-grade copy is being offered in the Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction presented by Heritage Auctions on December 10, 2022.
The highlight of the auction is the More Fun Comics #52 graded CGC 8.5 (lot 92134). Published by DC Comics in 1940, this comic features the first appearance and origin of the Spectre, by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel along with artist Bernard Baily. The character is police officer Jim Corrigan, who is murdered and whose spirit is sent back to earth to eliminate evil from the world. The Spectre creates a human form and continues to live on earth as Jim Corrigan. In 1942, the Spectre would become a founding member of the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America in All-Star Comics #3 (also available in this auction).

Throughout the years, the character has been resurrected and reimagined several times. The spirit of the Spectre briefly inhabited Green Lantern Hal Jordan in 2004 after his death, and he appeared on television in the series “Smallville,” and more recently on “Constantine” and “Arrow.”
Currently, the highest amount paid for More Fun Comics #52 is $119,500, achieved in 2006 by a CGC 9.2. The 8.5 copy available in this auction is already bidding well beyond that, for $150,000 and climbing.
