CGC Featured Comic of the Month: Spider-Man 2099 #1

Spider-Man 2099 #1 has been climbing in the market as the character is set to debut on screen in the animated film, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

Variants: In addition to the newsstand and direct market editions of this comic, there is also an Australian Price Variant ($2.65 AUS cover price) and a second print published by ToyBiz in 2001 with a white border on the cover instead of red.

What makes it special? Set during the year 2099, this comic features the first full-story and origin of Spider-Man 2099. However, the character officially debuted in a five-page preview of the comic that appeared in the 30th Anniversary Amazing Spider-Man #365, three months before the 2099 comic was released. Fans often debate which issue is the character’s true first full appearance.

Why is it interesting now? Spider-Man 2099 made a brief post-credit cameo in the 2018 film, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” voiced by actor Oscar Isaac. Now the film’s sequel “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is scheduled to arrive in US theaters on June 2, 2023, and Isaac returns as Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099).

Did you know? A Spider-Man 2099 animated series was considered in 1999, until Warner Brothers beat them to it with a future Batman animated series, “Batman Beyond.” Instead, the studio released “Spider-Man Unlimited,” which bears a similar design to the 2099 character. The Spider-Man Unlimited character will also appear in the upcoming “Across the Spider-Verse” film.

Total graded by CGC: As of March 21, 2023, there are a total of 8,242 copies of the direct and newsstand editions, 438 copies of the second print and 9 copies of the Australian Price Variant in the CGC Census.

CGC highest graded: There are 8 copies of Spider-Man 2099 #1 graded CGC 9.9.

Sales highlights: A CGC 9.9 direct market example was sold on eBay for $3,550 on March 14, 2021; a CGC 9.8 second print example was sold on eBay for $2,500 on December 21, 2021; and a CGC 9.8 newsstand example was sold on eBay for $1,602 on July 29, 2021.
