Iconic CGC-graded Rock Concert Posters Offered in Heritage Sale

The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground and Jimi Hendrix rock Heritage Auctions' concert poster sale in May.

Bidding is expected to be far out for two iconic rock concert posters from the 1960s, graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®). They are among over 150 CGC-graded posters in Heritage Auctions’ Music Memorabilia and Concert Posters sale on May 11-14, 2023.

One of the highlights of this auction is a Plastic Inevitable Show, The Velvet Undergournd and Nico original poster for The Trip, May 3-18 1966 graded CGC 9.8 (lot 26114). This item is an original promotional poster for The Velvet Underground and Nico's two-week performance, along with an extravagant multimedia extravaganza called the "Plastic Inevitable Show," organized by cultural icon Andy Warhol.

The event was scheduled to be held at the short-lived Trip nightclub, also known as "the New Shrine of Pop Culture," located on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California, from May 3-18, 1966. Unfortunately, the police halted the event after only three nights. The poster features a reproduction of Roy Lichtenstein's artwork, which was originally illustrated on the cover of Newsweek magazine on April 25, 1966. Last year, Heritage sold a CGC 9.6 example of this poster for $45,000.

Also in the auction is a Skeleton & Roses, Grateful Dead original poster for the Avalon Ballroom, September 16-17, 1966 graded CGC 9.2 (lot 26547). Bindweed Press created this poster to promote two concerts taking place in San Francisco. The tickets were available for purchase in various locations, including the Psychedelic Shop in Haight-Ashbury and Discount Records in North Beach, as well as in Sausalito, Berkeley, and Menlo Park. This poster holds the current world record for the most expensive psychedelic concert poster ever sold. In April 2022, a CGC 9.6 example was sold by Heritage for $137,500.
