Name of comic: Action Comics #252
Comic publisher: DC Comics
Date: May 1959
Variants: A “Millennium Edition” reprint was published in July 2000.
What makes it special? This issue famously introduced the world to Kara Zor-El — Supergirl! Like her cousin Superman, Kara was sent on a rocket by her father to escape the destruction of Krypton. On Earth, she adopted the name Kara Danvers.
Why is it interesting now? There isn’t just one Supergirl film project at DC right now; there are two! Supergirl appears in the upcoming Flash movie, and DC creative director James Gunn said the studio is developing a Supergirl movie based on the 2022 comic book mini-series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”
Did you know? After Kara died in the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline in 1985, Supergirl remained absent from the comics until 1988, when a new Post Crisis Supergirl was introduced in Superman #21. This Supergirl, however, was not Kara Zor-El; she was a shapeshifter from another dimension named Matrix. This was done because of a new editorial rule that insisted Post Crisis Superman be the only survivor of Krypton. This Matrix version of Supergirl assumed the identity of Linda Danvers. Kara Zor-El officially returned in Superman/Batman #8 in 2004, and Matrix was considered to be erased from the timeline in 2005’s Infinite Crisis.
