Posted on 7/25/2023

The first appearances of Poison Ivy, Spider-Man and more are included in Greenwich Collection offerings from Heritage Auctions in August 2023.

Whether you’re a Marvel or DC fan, there are plenty of exciting key issue comics, graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) in the Greenwich Collection sale at Heritage Auctions. Online bidding is already underway in the auction, which concludes on August 10, 2023.

Among the most exciting items from this collection is a Batman #181 graded CGC 9.8 (lot 83098) published by DC Comics in 1966 by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino. This issue features the first appearance of Poison Ivy. Dr. Pamela Isley is a brilliant botanist who becomes the villainous eco-terrorist known as Poison Ivy after a series of events that include experiments gone wrong and betrayal. Her primary motivation is her deep love and connection with plants, which leads her to view humanity as a threat to the natural world. This copy is one of only four graded CGC 9.8 in the CGC census. Bidding had already reached $80,000 more than two weeks before the auction.

Also in this auction is an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 3.5 (lot 83001). Published by Marvel Comics in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, this issue features the first appearance of Spider-Man. The story involves a high school student named Peter Parker, who gains spider-like superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider during a science experiment. What set Spider-Man apart from many other superheroes at the time was his relatability and everyday struggles as a teenager and later as a young adult. After his debut in Amazing Fantasy, Spider-Man crawled into his own title, The Amazing Spider-Man, in 1963.
