CGC-certified Matt Baker Comics in Heritage Sale

The work of iconic Golden Age comic book artist Matt Baker is being celebrated again as dozens of comic books graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) are being presented in an upcoming Auction. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage Auctions’ Matt Baker Comics & Comic Art Showcase sale, which will conclude on August 17, 2023.
Matt Baker was a talented and influential comic artist, among the first African-Americans in the industry, who was known for his significant contributions during the Golden Age of comics. Baker gained widespread recognition for his exquisite and dynamic artwork, particularly in the realms of romance, horror, crime and “Good Girl” comics. The term “Good Girl covers” was coined in the 1930s, referring to covers with provocative images of attractive women. Baker passed away in 1959 at the age of 37 and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2009.
One of top highlights in the auction is a Seven Seas Comics #4 graded CGC 5.5 (lot 81100), published by Universal Phoenix Feature in 1947. In March 2023, Heritage Auctions sold a CGC 9.2 copy for $81,000 to set a new record for this book. Another example of Baker’s work in this auction is a Secrets of True Love #1 graded CGC 3.5 (lot 81098), published by St. John Publications in 1958.
