Before seeing “The Marvels” in theaters, learn about the history of the character in this collection from BarryJames.

From the character’s beginning as Mar-Vell to the re-introduction featuring Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel has been one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Comics universe for more than 50 years. CGC Comics Registry member BarryJames has many key issues from the Mar-Vell era of Captain Marvel in their collection featuring classic Captain Marvel comics.

The legacy of Captain Marvel is a title held first by Mar-Vell and currently by Carol Danvers. Mar-Vell began his own series in Captain Marvel #1 (1968) as a Kree warrior tasked with spying on Earth but ultimately became a beloved hero who fought for the planet he initially intended to conquer. Mar-Vell ultimately died in the 1982 comic, Marvel Graphic Novel #1.

Carol Danvers, on the other hand, underwent a remarkable transformation from her initial persona as Ms. Marvel (Ms. Marvel #1, 1977). Her introduction as a US Air Force officer and NASA security chief took an unexpected turn when an explosion involving Kree technology fused her DNA with Mar-Vell's, granting her superhuman abilities. Danvers assumed the title of Captain Marvel in the 2012 comic, Avenging Spider-Man #9.

Teenager Kamala Khan then took upon the title of Ms. Marvel, in Ms. Marvel #1 (2014).

The impact of Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers in the realm of Captain Marvel extends beyond comic books. The portrayal of Carol Danvers by Brie Larson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced a broader audience to the character, inspiring a new generation of fans. On November 10, Larson returns to theaters as Captain Marvel, joined by Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau/Photon (Teyonah Parris) in the 2023 sequel film “The Marvels”.

Some of the Captain Marvel key issues found in this collection include:

  • Marvel Super-Heroes #12 graded CGC 9.8, with the first appearance and origin of Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell)
  • Captain Marvel #1 graded CGC 9.8
  • Captain Marvel #11 graded CGC 9.8, when Captain Marvel acquired new powers
  • Captain Marvel #18 graded CGC 9.8
  • Captain Marvel #25 graded CGC 9.8, with the debut of new series artist Jim Starlin
  • Captain Marvel #34 graded CGC 9.8
  • Marvel Graphic Novel #1 graded CGC 9.8 – Signature Series (author Jim Starlin), with the death of Captain Marvel

User BarryJames described his interest in the character: “‘The Most COSMIC Superhero of All!’ The phrase on that comic book cover captured my attention many years ago. It was then that I picked up and read Captain Marvel. I was hooked! It was a refreshing change from the usual Spider-Man/Fantastic Four titles I was accustomed to reading. I quickly became a fan of the Kree Warrior!

“I enjoyed the evolution of the title and Mar-vell's development. He went through many changes, though not all just cosmetic — from the ugly green Kree Captain's uniform, to gaining the Nega Bands and a striking new outfit. It was soon after this that Jim Starlin ushered in a new metamorphosis of Mar-Vell. Eon allowed him a way to abandon the way of the Kree Warrior, to gain Cosmic Awareness, and become the Protector of the Universe.”

This collection won Best in Set Type Awards from 2015 to 2019.
