CGC-certified Batman Debut Cover Realizes More than $200,000

Meanwhile, a CGC-certified Batman #1 realized more than $100,000 in a November auction that was presented by ComicLink.

Two Golden Age grail Batman comic collectibles certified by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) each realized more than $100,000 in a ComicLink auction on November 30, 2023.

Leading the way was a cover-only copy of Detective Comics #27 certified as CGC CVR Qualified, which realized $221,777. A Qualified label is used by CGC for collectibles that have a significant defect that needs a specific description or to note an unauthenticated signature. Also sold in the auction was a Batman #1 graded CGC 1.8, which realized $111,533.

One of the most iconic superheroes, Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. The Dark Knight made his first appearance in Detective Comics #27, which was published by DC Comics in May 1939. The character quickly gained popularity among comic book readers, and Batman soon became a cornerstone of DC Comics' superhero lineup.

These early Batman comics have been very popular on the auction block this year. A copy of Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 6.0 realized $1.74 million in April 2023. Meanwhile, this is the 14th time a CGC-certified copy of Batman #1 has been sold in public auction in 2023, and the fifth time it’s been found in a grade of CGC 1.8.

  • an Amazing Spider-Man #3 graded CGC 9.6 that realized $58,000
  • an X-Men #94 graded CGC 9.8 that realized $52,000
  • a Detective Comics #118 graded CGC 9.8 that realized $50,500
  • a Captain America Comics #13 graded CGC 9.0 that realized $44,500
  • a Fantastic Four #9 graded CGC 9.8 that realized $38,777
  • an Action Comics #15 graded CGC 7.5 that realized $37,205
  • a Tales of Suspense #39 graded CGC 8.0 that realized $37,000
  • an Amazing Spider-Man #14 graded CGC 9.6 that realized $36,000
  • an Incredible Hulk #1 graded CGC 6.0 that realized $35,501
