The first appearance of Batman set a new sales record in a March ComicConnect auction.

A comic book famous for the first appearance of Batman, and graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), just achieved a new record: $1.82 million. It was the top lot in the ComicConnect Event Auction 57 sale on March 19, 2024.

The book is a Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 6.5, which realized $1,825,088. There are only 77 examples of this comic in the CGC Census, and only eight are listed in a higher Universal grade. This latest sale set a new record for the comic, which was already held by this same example when it was previously sold for $1.74 million by Goldin Auctions in 2022.

"As stewards of comic book history, we're thrilled to witness the enduring power of iconic characters like Batman,” said CGC President Matt Nelson. “The record-breaking sale of Detective Comics #27 reminds us of the profound connection fans have with these stories and the remarkable value they hold in the realm of collectibles.”

First published by National Periodical Publications in 1939, Batman in Detective Comics (by creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger) was an attempt to mimic the success of Action Comics' Superman. The new superhero was indeed a success, which led to the Caped Crusader's own solo series in 1940. National Periodical Publications later renamed itself DC Comics after their debut title, Detective Comics.

Detective Comics #27 is one of only 11 comic books to ever have at least one issue realize more than $1 million.

Other CGC-certified comics sold in this auction included:

  • a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 Signature Series (Kevin Eastman) graded CGC 9.8 that realized $120,000
  • a Superman #1 graded CGC 1.0 that realized $90,000
