For many years, Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman, held the coveted title of most valuable comic. But in 2022, an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 9.6 realized $3.6 million, giving the crown to Spider-man. Superman regained top honors in 2023 when a Superman #1 graded CGC 8.0 realized $5.3 million. Now, Action Comics #1 is once again the king.
Published in 1938, Action Comics #1 sold out its entire 200,000-print run. It has been estimated that only about 100 copies still exist today, and only 78 are recorded in the CGC Census. Among those graded, only 44 copies (a little over half the total) earned CGC’s coveted Universal grade, of which only two are graded higher than this comic.
Sales for this iconic comic have impressed in recent years, including $3.25 million (CGC 8.5) in 2021, $3.4 million (CGC 6.0) in 2022 and $3.56 million (CGC 6.0) in 2023.
"This iconic issue stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Superman and the passion of collectors worldwide,” said Matt Nelson, CGC President. “Its meteoric rise in value underscores the timeless appeal of comic books and the unwavering faith collectors have placed in CGC-graded collectibles. We remain committed to preserving these treasures for generations to come, ensuring their significance transcends time."
Since his creation by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman has been the quintessential superhero and the embodiment of hope, justice and the timeless struggle between good and evil. Throughout the decades, Superman comics have consistently been among the best-selling titles in the comic book industry, captivating readers with thrilling adventures and inspiring narratives. Through those comics, as well as radio shows, television series, movies and various forms of media, Superman has evolved to reflect the changing times while maintaining his core values.
