This month's Hottest Comics feature puts a spotlight on Free Comic Book Day.

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual event celebrated by comic shops worldwide, typically held on the first Saturday in May. It serves as a celebration of the comic book medium, inviting fans of all ages to explore new titles and discover the joy of sequential storytelling. Established in 2002, Free Comic Book Day offers participating stores the opportunity to distribute specially printed comic books for free to anyone who visits their shop. These free comics often include a variety of titles from major publishers, featuring popular characters and introducing readers to new series and creators.

Beyond the free comics, Free Comic Book Day festivities often include creator signings, cosplay contests and other special events, fostering a sense of community among comic book enthusiasts and encouraging a love for reading and creativity.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 was first published by Marvel Comics in 2000 and was reprinted in 2002 under the Free Comic Book Day banner as part of the event’s first-year lineup of free titles and to tie into the release of the Spider-Man film opening that weekend. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1: FCBD Edition (2009)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, originally published in 1984 by Mirage Studios, introduced the world to Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, the pizza-loving, crime-fighting turtles trained in ninjutsu by their rat sensei, Splinter. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, this groundbreaking comic blended action, humor and social commentary in a way that resonated with audiences, spawning a multimedia empire that continues to thrive today.

When reprinted for Free Comic Book Day in 2009, this seminal issue gave fans both old and new the opportunity to revisit the turtles' gritty origins and celebrate 25 years of these unlikely heroes in a half shell. Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures FBCD Edition (2004)

Uncle Scrooge #1: FCBD Edition (2005)

Uncle Scrooge #1 from Gold Key Publishing debuted in 1965, marking the triumphant return of the beloved Disney character to the comic book world. This inaugural issue reintroduced readers to the adventurous world of Scrooge McDuck, the world's richest duck, as he embarked on daring quests for treasure and fortune. With stories penned by iconic creators like Carl Barks and Don Rosa, this series captured the essence of Scrooge's wit, determination and larger-than-life personality.

In 2005, the Free Comic Book Day’s Gemstone reprint of Uncle Scrooge #1 delighted fans with a nostalgic journey into Duckburg's whimsical realm. The reprint's cover paid homage to the original comic, serving as a visual tribute to the timeless charm and enduring legacy of one of Disney's most beloved characters.
