The one-of-a-kind Giant-Size X-Men #1 graded CGC 9.9 is among many high-grade CGC-certified comics in a June ComicConnect sale.

A one-of-a-kind ultra-high-grade grail comic graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) is found within the ComicConnect Event Auction #58, which opens on June 3, 2024. Bidding for the lots in the sale runs through June 24-28, 2024.

Highlighting the auction is a Giant-Size X-Men #1 graded CGC 9.9. Published in 1975, Giant-Size X-Men #1 played a critical role in revitalizing the X-Men franchise. Written by Len Wein and illustrated by Dave Cockrum, this comic introduced a new, diverse X-men lineup, which now included Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird and Wolverine. This issue is particularly significant as it not only injected fresh energy and multiculturalism into the series but also laid the foundation for future story arcs and character developments, ultimately ensuring the X-Men's place as a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe.

As of May 2024, there were more than 13,000 examples of Giant-Size X-Men #1 in the CGC Census, but this is the only one sitting at the top with a CGC 9.9 grade. Having never been to auction in this grade, it’s impossible to know how it might perform, but an example graded CGC 9.8 realized $72,000 in a June 2021 Heritage Auctions sale.

Other ultra-high-grade CGC-certified comics in this auction include an Addiction #1 graded CGC 9.9 Signature Series (Stanley “Artgerm” Lau) and a Wolverine Limited Series #1 graded CGC Gem Mint 10. According to ComicConnect, there are 52 CGC-graded comics in this auction that are the highest-graded examples for their issue, including many Golden Age entries.
