CGC-certified Pulps in Heritage Sale Include Many with Roy G. Krenkel Pedigree

Posted on 6/20/2024

The Heritage Auctions sale on July 11 also includes classic pulps featuring stories by iconic horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.

Classic pulp magazines that are graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), including many that once belonged to an iconic pulp artist, are featured in an upcoming sale. Bidding is already underway for Heritage Auctions’ Pulps Showcase Auction Featuring the Roger Hill Collection, which will be held on July 11, 2024.

Dozens of the pulps in this auction are pedigreed to the Roy G. Krenkel Collection, which CGC announced in May 2024. Krenkel (1918-1983) was one of the great mid-20th century American fantasy illustrators. His most celebrated art includes the classic 1960s Ace paperback covers for writer Edgar Rice Burroughs and his 1950s work for EC Comics, which involved collaborations with his close friends Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson.

From an early age, Krenkel was also a serious collector, focusing on inspirational fantasy art as well as pulps. He purchased his pulps directly from the newsstands and kept them in uniformly high-grade condition. Eventually amassing over 1,000 pulps, Krenkel added a small, inked issue number to the front of every cover, making a Krenkel pulp distinctive.

Among the pulps from his collection available in this auction is a Startling Stories #60 with a Roy G. Krenkel pedigree graded CGC 8.0 (lot 75247). Startling Stories was renowned for its sensational covers and thrilling tales. The magazine became a platform for both established and emerging science fiction writers. Notable contributors included Henry Kuttner, Jack Williamson and Edmond Hamilton.

Another exciting pulp in this auction is a Weird Tales #111 graded CGC 6.0 (lot 75287). This series was known for its emphasis on horror and fantasy fiction, and provided a platform for many legendary writers, such as H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Clark Ashton Smith. This issue, published in November 1934, is particularly notable as it featured Lovecraft's "The Challenge from Beyond” in which a man discovers an alien artifact that swaps his consciousness with that of a malevolent extraterrestrial being.
