Name: Evil Ernie #1

Comic publisher: Eternity Comics

Date: December 1991

Variants: None

What makes it special? This comic featured the very first appearance of Evil Ernie, a vengeful undead antihero, and Lady Death, a powerful sorceress ruling over Hell. Their popularity was fueled by the edgy, graphic storytelling and striking artwork, making them cult favorites and symbols of rebellion and counterculture during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Why is it interesting now? In the sweltering heat of July, as we celebrate Independence Day, we also honor the spirit of independence in the world of comics. Independent creators like Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes epitomize this spirit, with their groundbreaking Evil Ernie #1 bursting onto the scene with rebellious energy and dark humor.

Did you know? Originally an independent publisher, Eternity Comics was an imprint of Malibu Comics when this comic was published in 1991. When Malibu was sold to Marvel Comics, Evil Ernie creator Brian Pulido took his characters and launched his own new publishing label, Chaos Comics, in 1993. After the closure of Chaos in 2002, most of its library eventually landed in the hands of Dynamite Entertainment — except for Lady Death, which initially went to CrossGen but was later reacquired by Pulido for his Boundless Comics line.
