Name: Superman #75
Comic publisher: DC Comics
Date: January 1993
Variants: This comic was released with a newsstand edition (pictured), along with a poly-bagged collector’s edition and a platinum poly-bagged collector’s edition. Due to its popularity, there were subsequent 2nd, 3rd and 4th printings. Later, DC also released a Millennium Reprint direct and newsstand editions (2000), an Ace Comic Con edition (2000), a Dollar Comics reprint (2019), New York Comic Con red and pink foil editions (2022), a Megacon blue foil edition (2022), a San Diego Comic-Con black foil edition (2022) and a Dan Jurgens Special Edition exclusive standard and collector’s edition (2023).
What makes it special? The death of Superman was reported on major news channels and publications around the world and attracted swarms of new and existing collectors to comic book shops. The poly-bagged collector’s edition included an obituary poster, trading card, stamps and a memorial arm band. Superman #75 sold more than 6 million copies and is the second-best-selling comic book issue of all time (trailing only X-Men #1, which sold 8 million copies in 1991).
Why is it interesting now? The upcoming Superman movie has nearly completed filming in Ohio (the birthplace of the Man of Steel) and the fourth and final season of “Superman & Lois” will also debut on The CW in November, adapting elements of the Death of Superman story. All of this, along with exciting events happening in the comics, such as DC’s “Absolute Superman” coming in November, has led to an increase of Superman comic book sales in the market.
Did you know? DC Comics writers originally wanted to have Lois Lane and Clark Kent get married in 1992 but were not allowed at the time because of their relationship in the popular “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” television series on ABC. Instead, they decided to kill him. Lois and Clark did get married later, in 1996.
Total graded by CGC: As of July 19, 2024, there were 7,393 combined examples of Superman #75 newsstand, collectors and platinum editions in the CGC Census.
CGC highest graded: As of July 19, 2024, there were 2,712 combined examples of Superman #75 newsstand, collector’s and platinum editions graded CGC 9.8.

CGC Comics Registry Champion: CGC Comics Registry user BRob’s best has a Superman #75 graded CGC 9.8 in their BRob's Superman Volume 2 collection, helping to earn it a Best in Set Type Award from 2018 to 2023.
