Leading the auction was a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 5.5, which realized $172,221. Published by Timely Comics (a precursor to Marvel) in 1941, this comic featured the first appearance of Captain America. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the cover featuring Captain America delivering a punch to Adolf Hitler became an iconic image, reflecting the burgeoning patriotic fervor in the United States prior to its entry into World War II. This issue also introduced key characters such as Bucky Barnes, Cap's loyal sidekick, and the villainous Red Skull.
The auction also included the first 100 issues of Superman, sold in individual lots, and led by a Superman #1 graded CGC .5, which realized $84,370. After Superman’s debut, sales of Action Comics surged with each issue. DC then decided to give Superman his own title, another first for the Golden Age comic industry. Superman #1 hit the stands in the summer of 1939 and instantly sold out, proving the star power of the superhero.
