CGC Featured Comic of the Month: Infamous Iron Man #1

Posted on 9/3/2024

Marvel Studios sent shockwaves through the comic book community during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con, when they announced the return of Robert Downey Jr. ... as Dr. Doom!

Name: Infamous Iron Man #1

Comic publisher: Marvel Comics

Date: December 2016

Variants: In addition to the regular cover by artist Alex Maleev (shown here), there are seven variants by other artists, including Mike McKone, Skottie Young, Mike Deodato Jr. and Esad Ribic, as well as a hip-hop cover by Anthony Piper, an action figure cover by John Tyler Christopher and a blank variant. There was also a second printing featuring the Maleev cover.

What makes it special? In this comic, Diablo captures S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill, intending to extract security codes using a truth serum, but is thwarted by the now-reformed Dr. Doom, who disintegrates Diablo and leaves Hill confused. Doom later visits Dr. Amara Perera, seeking redemption, and decides to take on the mantle of Iron Man. Meanwhile, his actions are observed by Cynthia von Doom, pondering her son's new path.

Why is it interesting now? The Marvel Cinematic Universe began in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and for many fans it was poetic that it ended after 11 years with Stark’s sacrifice to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. It was believed that Downey was finished with the MCU, until Marvel Studios announced his return to the big screen during the panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024. But in a cosmic twist, Downey will now play the villain Dr. Doom! Will any of the other heroes recognize him as a Tony Stark variant, or will he be an entirely different character? We’ll just have to wait to find out when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters in 2026.
