CGC-certified Superman #1 Offered in Landry Pop Auctions Sale

Posted on 10/3/2024

The auction on October 8 also includes an incredibly rare Captain America Comics #1 signed by the iconic Jack Kirby.

Some of the most iconic grails, including first appearances and a rare signed Golden Age comic, are among the rarities graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) in an upcoming sale. Bidding is already underway for Landry Pop Auctions’ Icons & Heroes: Comics, TCG & Video Games auction on October 8, 2024.

Among the highlights of this auction is a Superman #1 graded CGC 1.8 (lot 253), with an estimate of $200,000 to $250,000. Published in 1939, Superman #1 is one of the most valuable and sought-after grails in comic collecting. This issue marks the first standalone comic book dedicated entirely to Superman, following his debut in Action Comics #1 published on April 18, 1938, by creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman #1 was the first comic book title devoted entirely to one hero. The debut issue featured several stories, including Superman's origin story retold, where readers learn about his journey from the doomed planet Krypton to becoming the defender of truth and justice on Earth.

This iconic comic book has garnered staggering prices in the collector's market, demonstrated by notable sales such as the private transaction of $5.3 million for an example graded CGC 8.0 in 2022. That sale makes the title the second-most valuable in comics of all time, only surpassed by Superman's first appearance in Action Comics #1.

Also offered is a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 8.0 Restored (lot 155), with an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000. Published by Timely Comics (a precursor to Marvel) in 1941, this comic featured the first appearance of Captain America. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the cover featuring Captain America delivering a punch to Adolf Hitler became an iconic image, reflecting the burgeoning patriotic fervor in the United States prior to its entry into World War II. This issue also introduced key characters such as Bucky Barnes, Cap's loyal sidekick, as well as the villainous Red Skull.

Notably, this comic also includes a rare authenticated signature by Jack Kirby on the first interior page.

Other CGC-certified comics in this auction include:

  • a Batman #1 graded CGC 6.5 Restored (lot 129), with an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000

  • a Daredevil #1 graded CGC 8.0 (lot 178), with an estimate of $7,000 to $9,000
  • a Fantastic Four #5 graded CGC 3.5 (lot 188), with an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000
