For CheezeBoi69, collecting horror comics isn't just a hobby; it's a way to celebrate the dark and twisted tales that define the spooky season.

Q&A with CheezeBoi69

Take us back to the beginning. How’d you get your start collecting comics?

I always loved superheroes and horror/slasher films growing up. I got into comics in 2017. My best friend started collecting comics first and I followed. My two favorite superheroes are Aquaman and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). I can't pick a favorite of the two; it's way too hard. When I first started collecting, I bought a few trades. The first two that I bought were “Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War” and “Aquaman: Trench” (New 52). Those were my first two comics that I read, and they still are my favorite stories for each character to this day.

Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis quickly became my favorite writer/artist duo overnight. I started collecting following that, and in these seven years I've come pretty far. I was able to complete the original Volume 1 Aquaman run. I have issues #1-63 and Showcase #30 (first Silver Age Aquaman). I'm about 95% done with “Green Lantern” Volume 2. I just need issue #1 and #87, and some run fillers. A few years back, I discovered that they made horror comics. You could only imagine how excited I was when I found that out!

It's been seven years since I started collecting. I've started college and become an adult, but I'm not stopping any time soon.

You’ve already completed some awesome Friday the 13th Registry sets. You’re working on sets from the Halloween franchise, and you just started one for Leprechaun — the first on the Registry. Did you grow up with these films or discover them later on?

I grew up with all of these horror franchises, and comic books have been an important part of my life. So, when I found out that these horror franchises had comics, I was super-stoked and excited. Jason is definitely my favorite horror/slasher character, so I set a goal to get every “Friday the 13th” comic book graded in CGC 9.8. It's going fantastic and I hope to be done with all of the Avatar Press series by the end of this year. When my next pre-screen comes back, I should only be missing 9.8’s of the Jason vs Jason X series. I have all of the books raw. They all are 9.8 ready. I'm also currently working on the Leprechaun and Halloween sets. Those I won't be able to get in 9.8 only, especially Halloween, mainly because of the rarity. However, even though I do plan to end up finishing them, Friday the 13th is my main priority right now.

Is there a horror film that you’d like to see adapted into a comic and why? Who would be on the creative dream team for it?

I would love to see the Prowler adapted into comic form. It’s one of my favorite slasher films to rewatch mainly because of the awesome practical FX work by Tom Savini. It is one of the main movies that comes to your mind when you think about classic ’80s slasher films. I think Brian Pulido and Tim Seeley would do great work on it.

Do you collect anything else horror-related?

I collect many custom pieces like masks/busts. I also like to collect original movie theater one-sheet posters. I started collecting posters a little while ago. I'm really hooked on it, so it’s been a main focus.

Any plans to put any other horror comic sets onto the Registry?

As of right now, I'm mainly putting together Halloween and Friday the 13th. I am currently working on the Avatar series. I have a pre-screen that should finish up the Bloodbath and Fearbook mini-series. I'm getting extremely close to finishing that. The two Halloween sets I'm working on, however, will take far longer, as some of the books that I'm missing aren't even available for purchase currently, so who knows for that. I'll probably end up adding 9.8 sets of Wildstorm Jason books, Avatar Freddy and Avatar Leatherface, but not right now.

This is a fun question we like to ask: If money was no object, what horror comic would you love to own?

If I could do this with any comic book, it would be Showcase #22 in a heartbeat.

However, for horror it definitely would be the Untold Tales of Halloween #1 Preview Ashcan. It is probably the holy grail of Myers books as there are only 66 in existence. I can't even find the last sale. If one ever comes up in the market, I will buy it. However, it will definitely cost me a pretty penny!
