CGC-certified Amazing Spider-Man #1 Realizes Nearly $30,000 in Hake's Auction

The first issue of the wall-crawler’s long-running series was among many comic book grails sold in the auction on November 20.

A debut issue of Spider-Man graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) swung off as the top comic book lot in Hake's Premier Auction #242 on November 20, 2024. The auction included a wide variety of books from the Golden Age through to the Modern era, including variants and many signed books.

The top price realized for any CGC-certified comic in this auction was an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 7.5 (lot 910), which realized $29,984.

Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and debuted in Amazing Fantasy #15 by Marvel Comics in 1962. The new superhero immediately found success with readers, so Marvel rushed out his own series, beginning with Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963. The comic focuses on Spider-Man’s adventures with stories that recount how Peter Parker received his powers and teamed with the Fantastic Four against the Chameleon. There are 5,096 examples of this comic in the CGC Comics Census as of the publication of this article.

  • an X-Men #1 graded CGC 3.0 (lot 1065), which realized $6,036
  • an Amazing Spider-Man #129 graded CGC 9.6 - Signature Series Gerry Conway (lot 950), which realized $5,855
  • a Daredevil #1 graded CGC 7.0 (lot 986), which realized $5,769
  • an Archie Annual #1 graded CGC 7.5 (lot 600), which realized $4,817

Prices realized include a buyer’s premium.
