Modern Spider-Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics certified by CGC also realized five figures in the March auction.

From the Golden Age to today, demand is strong for heroes such as Spider-Man, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the character who defined the genre: Superman. Three vintage cards and two modern comics, all certified by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), each drew impressive bids in Hake’s Auctions’ Auction 243 on March 26, 2025.

The top CGC-certified cards in the auction were a trio of Superman rarities, led by a Leader Novelty Candy Co. #36 Superman (1940) Mountain Tragedy graded CGC 1.5, which realized $29,538. This card comes from one of the earliest trading card sets dedicated to the Man of Steel, released at the height of Superman's Golden Age popularity. The set featured 48 cards showcasing scenes from Superman’s early comic adventures.

Two modern comics certified by CGC Comics also impressed in this auction. Top among them was an Amazing Spider-Man #667 Dell’Otto Variant graded CGC x JSA 9.8 (Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos), which realized $16,874. In this story, New York City is overrun with people gaining Spider-Man’s powers, leading to chaos as Peter Parker struggles to contain the outbreak while keeping his own identity a secret. This cover was a 1:100 retailer incentive, and there are just 77 copies of Amazing Spider-Man #677 Dell’Otto Variant in the CGC Census, including 27 graded CGC 9.8.

Second was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 graded CGC 9.2, which realized $14,422. This comic features the first appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as their Master Splinter. Before they were a hit Saturday morning cartoon for kids, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first introduced in comics as a dark, noir team of mutant vigilantes. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first published by Mirage Studios in 1984. The comic was a huge success as copies flew off the stands. The comic was licensed to Playmates, which altered the tone of the noir story to a more child-friendly concept to sell their line of toys and an animated series in 1987.
