Heritage Brings the World to You with an Auction of CGC-certified International Comics
Posted on 4/29/2025
Tour comic books from around the globe as you check out a worldly selection of more than 200 international comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) in a May auction. Bidding is already underway for Heritage Comics’ Foreign Comics Auction Showcase, which concludes on May 15, 2025.
Comic characters have existed across the globe in some form or another long before 1933, the year the modern comic book was created in America. Superman’s introduction in 1938 was another significant contribution, opening the door to modern mythology that went on to dominate US comics. Since then, comic books have flourished worldwide in many different genres and styles, attaining cultural significance in countries like France, Italy, Brazil and Japan.
Among the international highlights of this auction is an O Globo Juvenil Mensal #34 graded CGC 6.0 (lot 82124). Featuring Superman on the cover (originally used as cover of Superman #17), this Brazilian comic published in 1943 reprints Superman #7 as well as stories originally published in All-Winners #5, Spy Smasher #8 and Zip Comics #35. According to the auction house, this book originated in the Skye Ott Family Collection, which has spent more than 50 years amassing an impressive collection of vintage and international comics. Of only seven recorded copies of this comic in the CGC Census, this is the highest-graded example.
Also offered from across the sea is a Captain America Comics #76 Australian Edition graded CGC 7.0 (lot 82034). Published by Horwitz Publications in 1954, this comic features the same art by John Romita Sr. but with different coloring than originally published in the United States. Released after Cap’s popularity had cooled in the U.S., Horwitz kept the shield-slinger alive for Australian audiences with vibrant, offbeat covers and slightly rearranged interior content.
CGC follows the same grading standards for international comics as it does for American comics. For some terrific examples of CGC-graded international comics, check out the CGC Gallery of Certified International Comic Books.
