Defects Caused by Improper Pressing: Staple Impressions

Staple impressions occur when a barrier is not used during pressing, causing the staples to push into the paper around it. It is most visible on wraps immediately in front and behind the staples at the centerfold, and most common on comics where staples are not inserted directly on the spine (i.e., maverick staples or squarebound comics). On very thin comics like giveaways or modern comics with especially large staples, the impression can extend all the way through the cover. These impressions can be extreme or slight, depending on the pressure used, and in some cases will cause significant damage when the staple detaches or pushes through the paper.
