Shattering the Record, CGC-certified Amazing Fantasy #15 Realizes $3.6 Million!

Move over, Superman! There’s a new hero atop the comic book world. An Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 9.6 now holds the record for the most expensive comic book. Known for the first appearance of Spider-Man, the 1962 comic was sold in Heritage Auctions’ Comic and Comic Art Signature Art sale, which ended September 9, 2021.

The Silver Age rarity dethroned a copy of Action Comics #1 graded CGC 8.5 that realized $3.25 million earlier this year. Before that, another example of Superman’s premiere book graded CGC 9.0 had held the record since 2014.
A collector’s dream, this particular Amazing Fantasy #15 (lot 93001) represented a rare opportunity to own a copy at the top of the grading scale. Interest in the web-slinging superhero is high, with “Spider-Man: No Way Home” scheduled to reach theaters later this year.
It has been record-breaking year for CGC-certified comics. In addition to the Action Comics #1 that sold for $3.25 million, two Batman comics have realized seven figures: a Batman #1 graded CGC 9.4 that sold for $2.22 million in January and a Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 5.0 that sold for $1.125 million in June.
Meanwhile, other rare CGC-graded comic books in the September Heritage sale had impressive results. An issue of Batman #1 graded CGC 6.5 (lot 91033) realized $576,000. This Golden Age comic follows Batman’s adventures from his first appearance and introduces Batman’s greatest nemesis, the Joker, as well as the nefarious Catwoman.

Other CGC-certified highlights in the sale included:
- a The Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 9.4 (lot 93002) that realized $264,000
- a Batman #1 graded CGC 2.0 (lot 94042) that realized $222,000
- a Marvel Family #1 graded CGC 9.4 and pedigreed to the Promise Collection (lot 92094) that realized $186,000
- a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 4.0 (lot 91035) that realized $180,000
- a The Amazing Spider-Man #4 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 93005) that realized $174,000
- a The Amazing Spider-Man #2 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 93003) that realized $168,000
- a Marvel Comics #1 graded CGC 2.0 Restored – Moderate C-3 (lot 94065) that realized $156,000
All prices realized include the buyer's premium.
